Hand Beaded Toucan Statement Earrings – Sequin & Seed Bead Bird Post Earrings on Felt

ropical, theatrical and completely incapable of blending quietly into the background, these fabulous vintage statement earrings feature a pair of beautifully hand-beaded toucans perched on turquoise-colored branches. Each bird is constructed on a black felt foundation and decorated with an impressive mixture of seed beads, bugle beads and overlapping sequins. Glossy black sequins create the body and tail feathers, while brilliant orange beadwork forms the face. Pale blush sequins accent the throat, tiny yellow beads become the feet, and that magnificent sweeping bill is worked in warm antiqued-gold beads with bright yellow detailing. Even the round post tops are completely covered in spiraling metallic beadwork. These are generously sized earrings at approximately 3 3/8 inches long by 2 1/8 inches wide, yet the felt-backed construction keeps them much lighter than their dramatic appearance suggests. They are unsigned and remain in very good vintage condition. These belong firmly in the second group. The workmanship is wonderful, but that oversized golden beak absolutely steals the show. They're colorful, dimensional, gloriously excessive and exactly the sort of earrings that cause strangers to stop mid-sentence and say, “Wait. Are those TOUCANS?” Yes. Yes, they are.
