Vintage Matisse Pink Seafoam Enamel Copper Clip Earrings – 1950s Modernist Squares
A rare early Matisse enamel treatment gives these mid-century clip earrings their extraordinary texture. Each earring layers a softly irregular square of pale pink “seafoam” enamel over a larger polished copper square, creating a dimensional geometric design with wonderful contrast. The thick, pebbled enamel resembles a tiny coral reef and sits slightly raised above the warm copper foundation. This unusual seafoam technique was used during Matisse’s early enamel production and is prized for its sculptural appearance. Both clips are signed Matisse in script. The earrings measure approximately 7/8 inch square and remain in very good vintage condition. The delicate textured enamel is remarkably well preserved. The exposed copper shows expected surface wear, patina and age-related marks, particularly on the reverse, as photographed. Curator’s Note: Some designers used enamel to add color. Matisse apparently decided it should have its own topography. These tiny pink landscapes are gloriously strange—and unmistakably collectible.
